Supply chain chaos and port delays have caused shortages of everything from containers to truck chassis on a global scale. One group is now taking steps to ease the flow of a more critical component of cross-border trade: usable pallets.

In order to "strengthen the exchange of old pallets", the European Pallet Association eV (EPAL) updated its "EPAL Quality Classification and Exchange Clauses" in November. The revised document was developed by a pallet pool operator based in Düsseldorf, Germany, in collaboration with retailers, truck drivers, pallet service providers, and pallet repairers. It aims to speed up pallet purchases and pallets by providing answers to some common questions. The exchange process, including: Under what circumstances can EPAL Euro pallets no longer be replaced? Will wood chipping or residual labels reduce the quality of Euro pallets? How do you know if pallets are suitable for overhead racking systems? What is the best quality of an automated process?

The EPAL quality classification was originally drafted for the German market in 2011 and has since been adopted by other national committees, making it an increasingly important reference for all parties engaged in cross-border trade. EPAL Polska President and EPAL Board Member Roman Malicki, in a Said in the press release.

"The increase in cross-border supply chains and digital pallet management means that the use and exchange conditions of EPAL Euro pallets need to be the same in every country and must be easy to understand for all users," Malicki said. "The new version of the'Quality Classification and Exchange Clause' approved by all EPAL National Committees has improved the exchange of pallets throughout Europe."
